NEWS WE CAN USE
Ram Charan,
author of several texts, including: Leadership in the Era of Economic
Uncertainty: The New Rules for Getting the Right Things Done in Difficult Times (McGraw-Hill, 2008), notes that
managers, including human resource professionals, will be “tested” in their
decision making skills, given changes prompted by the troubled economy.
Charan
recommends that when laying off employees, HR professionals “will be judged by
how well and how fast the process works and how humanely it is carried out.”
Charan also
states that managers' and HR professionals’ ethics, integrity and credibility
will be tested more than ever before. According to Charan: “Play no
favorites. You are the ultimate representative of a company culture that values
intellectual honesty and treats human beings with respect. Your authenticity is
on the line. Don’t let it be tainted.”
Charan also
offered the following for HR professionals:
Communicate effectively and frequently
with employees.
Partner with business leaders.
Make cuts in your own budget.
Identify the cause of morale problems.
