GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT- MBA - INTERNSHIPS
The master degree Internship program sets Union Graduate College apart from other MBA programs. Not only is the internship an important resume builder and a “foot in the door” to post-graduation job opportunities, the internship also provides students with hands-on experience that adds relevance to graduate study.

Union Graduate College MBA Programs draw extensively on the experience and potential of New York’s Capital Region businesses. Our professional staff and faculty leverage their long-standing connections within the business community to ensure that every MBA candidate has access to a multitude of internship opportunities. Internships abound in finance, marketing, human resource management, healthcare and other related professions. More than 95% of our internship opportunities are paid positions. A full-time Coordinator of Career Services is available to assist Union Graduate College students in securing a meaningful internship.

What Union Graduate College students say about their internship experience.

Purpose of the MBA internship
  • Apply graduate study theories, concepts and skills learned in the Union Graduate School MBA Program;
  • Gain exposure to the day-to-day functions of an organization while accomplishing comprehensive tasks;
  • Strengthen judgment, decisiveness, critical thinking and teamwork skills;
  • Assess and develop professional capabilities in the work environment for a successful career in business.
Meeting the MBA internship requirement

In order to graduate, full-time, matriculated MBA Degree Program Study students are required to complete a minimum of 400 hours of meaningful employment in a business environment including JD/MBA, PharmD/MBA and the accelerated BA or BS and MBA program students.

Students pursuing part-time graduate study may participate in an internship, although it is not required.

Steps to complete the MBA internship process
  1. Search for an Internship It is the student’s responsibility to actively search for a position, although the Union Graduate College Coordinator of Career Services will support and assist you in your search. Generally, students start this process sometime after their first term so they can get a better understanding of how to balance their course load with the internship hours, and their internship area of interest. Typically, internships will be paid positions.
  2. Qualify the Internship
    Internships posted by the Career Services office will indicate whether or not the position meets the requirement. If a student finds a position on his/her own, the Coordinator of Career Services will need to review the position to determine if it meets the intent of the internship.
  3. Get the Internship Approved
    The student must complete an Internship Agreement, which includes a detailed description of the job and the work it entails. Once the Internship Agreement is completed, it must be signed by the student, his/her supervisor and the Coordinator of Career Services. This form is kept in the student’s file in the Career Services office.
  4. Register for the Internship Course
    This is done in Union Graduate College’s Registrar’s office, and is a no-cost, non-credit bearing internship. Once the internship hours are completed, a student will receive a pass/fail grade, indicated on the student’s transcript.

    General MBA: register for course MBA683
    Health MBA: register for course HCM 683

    The internship requirement must be met in order for full-time, matriculated students to graduate, in addition to the 20 required courses.
  5. Submit the Internship Paperwork
    After completing the internship, the student must submit the Union Graduate College Employer Evaluation- MBA intern (completed by the supervisor) and the Union Graduate College Student Evaluation – MBA internship (completed by the student). Once these two reports are received, based on the information provided within these reports, the Coordinator of Career Services will determine pass/fail status. Written verification will be sent to the Registrar’s Office and the grade will be processed on the student’s transcript.

    Note: Full-time, matriculated students who need to meet the internship requirement may complete their internship hours at more than one company, as long as the total number of hours meets or exceeds 400 hours.

    Until all paperwork is received, the student will receive an Incomplete as a grade (indicated by an “I” on the transcript)
Waiving the internship requirement
In exceptional cases, where a student can submit proof of qualified, meaningful work experience that relates to the MBA, the internship may be waived. The waiver and proof of work, typically indicated through an updated resume, is submitted to the Coordinator of Career Services to determine waiver status.

THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION INTERNSHIPS
Union offers New York State’s only year-long internship for aspiring secondary school teachers. Each student is matched with a secondary-school mentor teacher. We know each one of our students and mentors well, and we involve them in deciding the student-mentor match. The result is a mutually beneficial relationship in which the mentor and student ultimately become colleagues. The internship allows students to connect educational theory with educational practice.

Our secondary school partners tell us that Union School of Education grads are a step above the rest, in part due to their extensive internship experience. Our graduates are fully prepared to take the lead in the classroom at graduation!

Most MAT students complete a yearlong, half-day internship in a secondary school setting, team-teaching two classes with a mentor teacher. The internship is required and counts as 3 course units in the MAT program. The internship serves as a laboratory for EDS 550A, B, and C. Students are expected to interview at the site(s) where they hope to intern.

Entrance into the internship portion of the program is contingent upon completion of the Psychology of Teaching, the appropriate Curriculum and Methods course, and the Introduction to Literacy Course with minimum grades of “B”.

THE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE INTERNSHIPS
Engineering students benefit from the school’s longstanding relationships with the business community, as well as the connections made through fellow students who work at top-level companies in the area. Internships are not a requirement of the Program. However our relationships with local industries enable us to support student efforts to obtain part-time employment opportunities in conjunction with their continuing efforts to attain a Master of Science Degree. These part-time employment opportunities often lead to permanent positions in highly competitive markets.

The Master of Science programs are offered in partnership with a consortium of engineering companies including GE Research and Development and GE Power Systems, Bechtel Plant Machinery Inc., Lockheed Martin-Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, and Plug Power.

THE CENTER FOR BIOETHICS AND CLINICAL LEADERSHIP PRACTICA & INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The Center for Bioethics and Clinical Leadership offers three programs; The Bioethics Program, the MS in Clinical Leadership in Healthcare Management Program, and the 8-year Leadership in Medicine Program.

The Masters in Bioethics degree offered through The Bioethics Program, a joint degree offered through Union Graduate College and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, offers students supervised experience through practica in clinical ethics consultation and clinical leadership. On-site practica are offered through Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the medical institutions in the Bioethics Consortium.

The MS in Clinical Leadership Program does not require an internship. However, many students opt to participate in a graduate health administration internship. The internship is an excellent resume builder and a way to gain valuable hands-on experience to add relevance to the classroom experience. Additionally, over 95% of our graduate internships are paid positions. Students find the internship a practical way to help fund their degree.

The 8-year Leadership in Medicine (LIM) Program is a joint program with Union College, Union Graduate College and Albany Medical College. Interested students should contact the Union College Admissions Office for information http://www.union.edu/Admissions/

LIM students have two graduate degree options: an MBA in Healthcare Management or an MS in Clinical Leadership in Healthcare Management. The internship is not required for the MS degree. The MBA has a 400 hour internship requirement. The internship provides students with hands-on health administration experience that adds relevance to the classroom experience and expands their understanding of healthcare systems.

Alumni - Elizabeth Smith-Boivin
Our UGC graduate intern has been an asset to the Center. Not only is he very bright and insightful, he understands the importance of ongoing organizational analysis as it relates to continuous quality improvement. For that reason, I had him assist me with an analysis of the organizational and leadership dynamics here at the NRC. He made many helpful observations and assisted me in making recommendations, which were later accepted by hospital administration and are currently being operationalized.
