Union Graduate College MS for Teachers of Mathematics and Science Program Description

The MS degree in science or mathematics is awarded for the completion of 11 courses (36.6 credits). Typically, six courses are taken in one of three general teaching subject areas:
  • Life Sciences (biology, chemistry, geology)
  • Physical Sciences (chemistry, geology, physics)
  • Mathematics/Computer Technology
The thesis for this Masters Degree generally comprises of two of the six courses in the academic discipline area of the student’s desired area of concentration. In lieu of a thesis, students may enroll in EDS 580, which involves conducting classroom-based research in teaching as it relates to their discipline. This MS for Teachers of Mathematics and Science Project is normally completed during the winter term with a School of Education faculty member. Electing to complete a project usually means completing one additional required elective in the discipline than those who complete an MS for Teachers thesis.

Teaching students are required to take five elective courses beyond the six courses required in your academic discipline area. Students advisors must approve teaching course selections.

Computer literacy is also a key component of the program. If a teaching student is entering the program with less than basic computer knowledge, she/he must take CST 265. If a student has a greater degree of computer literacy, the student must include a computer elective or demonstrate competence in one of the computer course areas.
